When is someone educated?

Being educated may have many different meanings. I personally believe that being educated does not just involve proper schooling. An educated individual is someone who sees conflicts from every perspective. Educated persons are open minded, not ignorant, accepting of all people no matter what their background is. Friendliness is a characteristic of a Educated person along with being polite. Also the individual would be knowledgable about current events, and basically know whats going on in the world. They would be concerned about epidemics and cruelty going on in the world such as Darfur and other places. An educated person would be working to make a change in the world for the better. An educated person rarely watches T.V. and instead reads books.

Peer Review

The peer review was definately very helpful. Someone else reading your paper helps you because they may pick up a problem you've been skipping over. They might also explain why a sentence that makes sense to you doesnt make sense to them. The improvements and comments they mention on the sheet also will provide as a guide when revising the paper for the final draft. All in all I liked the peer review and would do it again. Maybe it could be improved by not being anonymous... to me it just seemed like it caused confusion.

Argument Essays #1 Just be nice

This essay talked about learning manners in school, and how people treat one another. I thought the topic of this essay was clear, but was not sure if the author was on one side or the other. He has a great arguable position, but lack of defining which side he is on. He gives a lot of good background information of how manners were taught to him in school around the sixties. He uses many examples to support his reasons, using court cases, his own history and references to magazines. His support of his reasons definatley convinced me that he researched the topic in depth. The values in this essay are one everyone should appreciate because no one likes being treated rudely. Since I'm not sure what side of the argument he was on it was hard to see if he considered the other positions. The author's main goal is to get everyone to treat each other with respect, and explain the essence of civility.

Summary:
Professionals agree that addiction to the game is a mental disorder. This interview of a doctor who has treated patients suffering from addiction thinks that addiction to World of Warcraft is no different than a drug addiction.

Paraphrase and a response:
There are millions of gamers playing online games and the number of addicted players is growing rapidly. Dr. Orzack believes 40 percent of World of Warcraft players are addicted to the game (Wright Para. 3). The clients she works with have trouble separating themselves from the game and real life. They imagine themselves as their character in the game, and get so attached that sometimes intervention is needed. Dr. Orzack believes that now that videogames are easy to access everywhere the problem will still be growing rapidly (Wright Para. 6).

Summary:
Addiction of online games can ruin relationships, grades, or worse. Addiction to games has even been linked to some suicides. If gaming ever interferes with real life, it's a wise idea to quit the game.

Paraphrase and a response:
The fantasy worlds offered by online computer games can become a very huge addiction for older teenage males, and young adult males (Becker Para. 5) This demographic shows the age of people being addicted to these games is around college level or some form of schooling. Online gaming could seriously affect one's work, or homework especially at this age. Even gaming consoles can even be addicting to young children, with out even being online. This proves the addicting nature of video games in general.

Project Proposal

Since my topic is addiction with online gaming (specifically world of warcraft), I'm going to provide background information on the point of the game. Many people do not know about online gaming and the costs of it, both financially and socially. My first supporting point will have to do with the amount of income Blizzard (The company who makes world of warcraft) makes. Not only do they make money on monthly fees, but also on character transfers, name changes ect. My second supporting point will have to do with the rehabilitation centers for people quitting the game. This point will prove that the nature of the game is addicting. My third point will have to do with aspects of the game that make you continue to play it, like its never ending content and expansions that are added. All of these points will help me construct a good argument with factual reasons that will prove online games are addicting.

Audience, Purpose and Design

Audience, purpose and design are all essential to keep in mind when writing a piece of literature. A piece of writing may have many purposes, but it always has a main one. A large role in my writing as of right now is to entertain people. I'm a music performer and entertaining is what I love to do, so at this point in time my main purpose in writing would be to entertain readers with my creativity. Knowing my primary purpose helps me to focus on the aspects of my writing that readers will find funny, interesting, and worth while. Writing for a specific audience goes hand in hand for knowing your purpose. If you're writing to entertain people and the audience it is being presented to is there to learn factual information they're going to be disappointed. Audience has not played a large role in my writing because usually the teacher is the only one reading my work... but now since we have these blogs I guess that is all going to change! My hopes are people like my blog and enjoy my writing. Lastly, when thinking about your audience the type in which you present your work is extremely important. If I'm writing a formal document I would use plain paper, a normal font, with all the right punctuation and grammar. On the other hand if i was typing an e-mail to my friend I could use any font and use whatever type of slang I wanted. If something is more important than the rest of the texts I underline or put it in bold print. Design has had a small role in my writing and I mostly have used it to better get my point across. All in all, audience, purpose, and design are all connected to each other in the writing process. I may not use all three effectively yet but I will try my best to learn how to.
